Just a quick note to chime in with dad -- Lizzie is doing incredibly well as a big Sister. It's amazing, but Lizzie clearly grasped the import of the moment, the minute she walked into the hospital room the first time. She exclaimed "baby sticker, baby sticker!" with the widest, most awed little expression I've ever seen. She then carefully identified Alice's little parts: fingers, toes, eyes, ears, hair, etc.
Since Alice and I came home last Monday, Lizzie has continued to be very attentive. She still likes labelling Alice's little parts (especially toes and fingers), and brings Alice toys to play with. Sweetest of all, Lizzie is very big on hugs, and gives Mommy and Alice big hugs as often as the opportunity arises.
The only really tough part of the transition so far is from my side. Lifting anything in excess of 10lbs is strictly verboten for another 4-6 weeks; at 30+ pounds, Lizzie is definitely out of bounds. (Labor with Alice ended with another C-section, despite much stubbornness and a long slog. (Like her big sister, Alice had a big, malpositioned noggin.)) I think (hope) that Lizzie's starting to understand it's not personal, but for a few days it clearly broke her heart (and mine!) when I wouldn't/couldn't pick her up. (After all, I was holding Alice all the time, so why not Lizzie? From her perspective, it must have been seemed like she was displaced.) But I'm healing very quickly, and can now get down on the floor for reading time, big hugs, etc. And with no more giant tummy, I actually have a lap for sitting in!
As Eric mentioned, it'll take a few more weeks to know what we're in for -- just have to see how things shape up after all of the grandparents head north. Fingers crossed!
PS: Eric failed to mention the other major milestone: ABCs. Lizzie can identify nearly all (or all -- depends on the occasion) of her letters both by signing and in written form. Perhaps we weren't paying enough attention, but it seems like she mastered them over the course of a few days. Go team!
