Lizzie visited her preschool today for the first time. Classes don't start until next week, but there is a very nice one-on-one (or, rather, two-on-one) opportunity for kids to visit the classrooms and teachers before the other kids get there. So Lizzie went to school today, for all of about half an hour, to orient herself to her classroom and to visit her new teachers, Miss Michelle and Miss Danielle. She was, of course, a total ham, soaking up as much attention as she could, getting her slippers on, finding and doing new `work', and generally getting to know the place.
It is immediately clear that Miss Danielle and Miss Michelle are both quite excellent. They managed, in that still mysterious to me calm, quiet, Montessori way, to keep Lizzie on task and focused. Although Lizzie wanted to flit all around the room (and there IS so much to see), they each guided her to one activity, and saw her through a particular lesson. She got to choose what to do, of course, but then she needed to follow through. Remarkably, she did! Three year olds -- or, rather, OUR three year old -- are generally not known for attention span.
So in any event, I'm very excited about the new school, and so to is Lizzie as far as I can tell. I'm terribly jealous. The smell of fall abounds -- wet leaves and ripening apples, hints of woodsmoke and dry grass. I'm ready for a new lunch box and a pristine box of crayons. On a day like today, I might even be tempted to eat a bologna sandwich or thermos of spaghetti Os. (Okay. Maybe not. Nostalgia only extends so far...)
