Happy Birthday, Lizzie!

Lizzie turned 2 on Thursday. It was a busy week for all, with potty training, grant deadlines, and teaching/advising in full swing, so we decided to wait until next year for a full blown party. (Instead, we had a long playdate with Anastasia and Anika yesterday.)

All the same, Lizzie had a great day. After opening one present first thing in the morning -- a wooden food cutting set, which she loves -- Lizzie went to school as usual. There she and her classmates marked the day with orange muffins at snacktime. Daddy picked her up at noon, and she had a quiet lunch and smooth transition to naptime. She slept for a LONG time (we all have colds, so sleep is in around here) waking up shortly after 4. There wasn't much daylight left, so we had to save the new trike (thanks O'mama and O'Pa!) for another day. But she sure liked the other presents. She talked about "new mumuts" all afternoon, and continues to point out who gave her what today. (Though "O'mama and O'Pa", which now refers to both sets of grandparents, get credit for pretty much everything... Fine by us, as the grandparent label seems to make everything more appealing.)

The biggest hit (and I'll take credit for this, thanks -- I searched for hours): new boots! She insists on wearing these everywhere and with everything (or nothing at all).

Lizzie requested dinner from the "pee pee man" (otherwise known as Papa John), who graciously arrived with a veggie supreme right on time. (She also requested a bath from the pee pee man, but had to settle for mommy instead...)

Best of all, we had cake. Lizzie decided that her birthday cake should be HERS. And we couldn't really see a reason why not, so we let her have her fun (and all the frosting she wanted...)

At night, she was enchanted by her new "twilight turtle," which projects stars on her ceiling. It's very neat. The look of wonder in her eyes as the room lit up was pure magic. (For months, we've talked about the moon and the stars every night as we get ready for bed, so I think it was a revelation to have them in her room.) The only problem is that she wakes up wanting it at 4 in the morning and won't go back to sleep (it's really cool...). So until the morning potty training is sorted out, twilight turtle has gone for a little vacation. Hopefully it'll come back in a few weeks

One other present didn't make it's arrival until yesterday, when mommy finally had time to set it up. (And Lizzie had a full afternoon to play with it.) Needless to say, the easel is a BIG hit, even before the paints have arrived. Note the excessively cute birthday outfit from Grandma. (Lizzie has insisted on wearing it for two days running.)

We have exciting news on the potty training front, too, so stay tuned. Be sure to check out the new photos on Picasa in the meantime.
