We've had quite a month (plus) since last checking in. Shortly after Lizzie sat up in her own in mid-June, she became decidedly mobile with a rolling-sitting-lunging-pivioting routine. She got around pretty quicky and found all sorts of trouble. Within seconds she could be across the room (though generally she was not, and her aim was more than a little off...) Apparently this wasn't fast enough, though: she started commando crawling (sort of) by the last week of June. After that it was a string of firsts as we headed to NH for the month where we enjoyed cooler (okay, cold!) weather, time to work (at Tuck), and lots of time with family. A recap of the recent highlights:
First crawling on July 4th, at Grandma and Grandpa Blanchard's house, in hot pursuit of the video camera (which she immediately slimed with a sticky hand). She mastered the art almost immediately and can now crawl over almost anything. (The sticky-hand slime was already a skill well honed.)
First long consonant chains and ba-ba-ba bwa-bwa-bwa sounds on July 10th, at O'Mama and O'Pa Furstenberg's house. We were at a wedding in Cambridge and stunned to hear our little chatterbox after just one night away! Other sounds often heard now include (both singly and in chains): bwa-, ma-, ka-, ga-, gee-, da-, dee-, pah-, puh-, and I think ta-. So proud. Lizzie's also using very adult intonation at times, including the questioning lilt. I haven't the vaguest idea what she's asking "how's my pronunciation?" perhaps... or maybe it's "what do you think you're looking at, toots?"
First pull to standing yesterday, August 7th, at home using the green courdory chair. She's done it a few times since, but still seems content on her knees most of the time. From mid July, she's been standing indefinitely with a hand on furniture or an adult for support. She gets better day by day and is threatening to walk before too long. yikes!
First wave and first clap: both today (!) August 8th, at home. The wave is a funny thing and has been showing up for about a week, though I wasn't certain it was intentional until today when we were playing in the mirror. I would wave, then she'd "wave" and giggle, then I'd repeat the wave, so would she, and so on. I'll try to get a picture soon. Her arm extends a bit behind her with her hand upturned, as if she's doffing some truly enormous hat. Quite ridiculous.
The clapping started today too. She's clasped her hands with gusto and repeatedly in the past, but it hasn't been a clap, exactly, since she's held her hands for at least a few seconds after bringing them together. Today, though, she was clearly clapping -- palms wide open and grinning madly -- as I greeted her from her afternoon nap. She had a special present for me in her diaper (beets!) and seemed to be showing her approval for my prompt arrival.
The other first isn't quite so much fun: Lizzie's been on a nursing strike since late last week. It means a lot of pumping and a mountain of bottles and equipment to clean each night. I've read that this isn't uncommon after a prolonged absence by mom (I was away for the NBER for 4 nights last week) or in the midst of travel (check: we drove back at the end of last week from NH), or when mom's been away during the day (yep -- at the office all day this week). I'm hoping it'll pass, but if not, the Medela will get quite a workout. Not much fun, but so it goes.
In the meantime, we're enjoying being together all weekend!
